Cat litter containers

I have several heavy duty plastic containers that had cat litter in them. I have water stored in them that I plan to use for flushing toilets and such. I am wondering if they would be safe to store drinking water?

I have the same litter containers. They would do fine to store drinking water if thoroughly washed out. I decided to just fill them with tap water and if we need to drink the water, I will run the water through the Berkey or the Katadyn water filter.
